Who can play?

*Booklists will be available at each branch of the Cold Lake Public Library in early September.

Why play?
Battle of the Books is a literacy-building pro-gram that is a great way to get children excited about reading and to help them branch out in their reading choices. It also encourages good sportsmanship and fair play. And it’s fun! Each year we contact authors from our Reading Lists and some send back replies! On “Battle Day” we share those responses. We've had messages from Ruth Ohi, Chris Hadfield, Robert Munsch, Aviaq Johnston, Chris Gra-benstein, Ben Clanton, Kazu Kibuishi and Katherena Vermette—just to name a few!

Rules of the Game:
Each team will consist of six players composed of students from grades 4, 5, 6 (Junior level) or grades 7, 8, 9 (Senior level). Teams can have up to three substitute players.
On the day of the event, teams will participate in 4 Battle Rounds, and they will be asked questions from each of the categories on their list in each round. Each team will be asked an equal number of questions. The questions will be addressed to the teams alternately, regardless of which team gave the last correct answer. A pause for substitutions will take place after the fourth pair of questions. Note: Only the first round will have a warm-up with practice questions.

Where do we find the books?
You will find all the books on the reading lists in the public library! The whole list is available in print, but many titles are also available as ebooks or audiobooks as well. Audiobooks can be borrowed on CD or are available in digital format from the same library services as ebooks.
Just use your library card to access them, and then download to your device to read or listen — ask us how if you aren’t sure! If you need accessible options of any titles let us know. We can also work with coaches to lend blocks of the reading lists for periods of up to two months.
